His problems begin when two strangers join them on the trip
Alex de la Iglesia’s black comedy – shot mostly on the Castilian motorway and at the Hotel Marqués de Riscal – is a crazy road movie, well-paced, competently acted and wonderfully funny. Alex de la Iglesia spins a thriller/comedy in his sui-generis style. In his 50s, Julian (Alberto San Juan), divorced and struggling with money, uses the car-sharing app 'BlaBlaCar' to travel around Madrid. He falls in love with Lorena (Blanca Suárez), a regular passenger, and now wants to use the next trip to confess his feelings to her. However, he makes a mistake in choosing the remaining tenants, the annoying Rodrigo (Ernesto Alterio) and the picky Sergio (Rubén Cortada).
A disturbing road movie combined with a romantic comedy, like a strictly enjoyable film with bright colors
A black comedy, funny situations and rare roles from the unconventional director Álex De La Iglesia who also wrote the screenplay, along with his usual screenwriter Jorge Guerricaechevarrío. Álex de la Iglesia brings us a very mixed bag of unusual characters, fast-paced dialogues and absurd situations in a luxury car. De la Iglesia returns to the black comedy terrain of his previous works, focusing on the relationship between the four off-the-wall characters. It can be very funny and very touching at the same time, so it was the perfect combination for me. This is a distinctive and entertaining film in which Álex reestablishes his unique and visually striking style that takes your breath away.
A crazy road movie that boasts a beautiful and attractive cast
Pleasant interpretations of Alberto San Juan as a divorced 50-year-old with money problems who resorts to using an app to share his car, Blanca Suárez as his secret love interest, Rubén Cortada as a handsome, free young man and especially a mention for Ernesto Alterio who steals the show as a disturbed, troubled passenger who will cause a dramatic change in the course of events. This darkly humorous picture is competently directed by Álex de la Iglesia and produced in his new brand of horror films that he calls ¨The Fear Collection¨ together with his wife Carolina Bang, in fact, the character played by Alberto San Juan has certain similarities to Álex, as he is a divorced man, like De La Iglesia who recently married a woman twenty years younger, Carolina Bang herself; similar to Blanca Suárez and Alberto San Juan, who are indeed separated by 20 years from each other. As has become common in the filmography of Álex de la Iglesia, this new entry moves between humor, thriller and suspense, in this case under the guise of a hilarious road movie combined with a romantic comedy and the merging of good actors who have previously worked with the Basque director, such as: Ernesto Alterio and Blanca Suárez in ¨The Bar¨. Alex De La Iglesia is a cool director who has achieved many successes, such as: ¨Accion Mutante¨ ,¨Dying of laughter¨ or ¨Muertos De Risa¨ , ¨Baby's room¨ , ¨Oxford murders¨ , ¨Balada Triste De Una Trompeta¨ , ¨Perdita Durango¨ , among others. This is without a doubt an exciting and enjoyable film that will be enjoyed by lovers of black humor and fans of Álex De Iglesia, the Spanish king of black comedy.
Acceptable and passable
Rating: 6/10. It’s worth a look.
